A final round of betting is called a showdown. A showdown occurs when all but one player has folded. Each of the remaining players must now show their hands. Typically, the player with the highest hand wins the pot.

Poker may have its origins in a game known as brelan, a French game of comparing cards that can be traced back to the early 14th century. There is evidence that the game was brought to the New World by Persian sailors who settled in Louisiana in the 17th century. Since the 18th century, the game has spread to other countries. However, there is no definitive proof of its origins.
